Tropical growth and house gods forms the background for the beautiful Ni Pollok as she’s being painted by her husband. Her marriage to Mayeur has not made her a European. Her wedding ring, the thing she loves most of all, is the only western thing she carries.
Bali the small island close to Java in the Indonesian Archipelago is in spite of its smallness, world famous. Tourists from all over the globe come here because of the islands beauty and painters have come here to find subjects for their paintings. For Mayeur, the Belgian artist, Bali has become an never ending source of inspiration from which he can’t tear loose. He intend to spend the rest of his days here together with his Balinese wife, Ni Pollok, his most treasured model. This, Bali’s mos beautiful woman, has been modeling for her husband countless times and many are the tourists who have brought back one of the paintings from this island that has made Mayeur world famous.
Ni Pollok does all her shopping herself. Many are the Europeans who have visited the hospitable artist’s home. They do not only talk well of her cooking but also of her ability to create a friendly atmosphere. She is a marvelous hostess.
Bali is full of gods, Brahma, Wishnu and Siva are the most important and all the island ceremonies are to satisfy them. Ni Pollok, who like all Balinese women, make her own clothes , shows her new colourful ""kain" to a dreadful god, carrying a crown like shape on it’s head.

The times when Balinese women had to use the surface of a pond as a mirror is long gone. Ni Pollok use a real mirror these days when she puts on the traditional colourful head gear.
Ancient traditions dictates the form and shape of this sacrificial gift to the gods. Lotus- and cambodia flowers are the main parts of this beautifully smelling homage.
Bal’s sun will dry Ni Pollok’s golden skin when she climbs out of the pond in front of their house. |
