This is a picture from the beauty contest Jeanne won. You’ll find her as no 15 from the left. To the left she is with her trophy. Jeanne detests this photo from the contest. No wonder she dislikes being ogled from all angles and having her picture taken by all and sundry. MGM wasn’t taking all that much of a chance when they offered Jeanne Crain a contract paying her 75 $ a week. Should she be completely useless – well, the cost hadn’t put much of a dent in their budget. Should she hide some kind of a talent behind that pretty face, they would get their money back with interests and if they were in luck she might turn into a gold mine. And MGM struck gold with Jeanne. Jeanne Crain is famous beyond beliefs to day, something she could hardly have imagined when she entered that beauty contest in 1942. But the first thing MGM did when they had her signature on the contract was to send her back too mom and dad and back to school. Movie parts wasn’t all that important now that they had that pretty bating suit girl in their stables and should the need turn up, she didn’t live further away than half an hours drive with a car. |
He had just returned from the war and as he had gone through the studio’s "assets", his experienced eye fell on the pictures of pretty Jeanne. He grabbed the phone and the next day young Jeanne Crain had a movie part.

When Jeanne Crain won a beauty contest in Long Beach, California in 1942 she knew nothing about the movies or acting. She was just a very pretty girl, that looked particularly good when wearing a bathing suit. On the other hand with luck on your side this could bring you a long way. A girl would have to extraordinary daft not to fit into a movie or other with looks like that.
