No other film star appear in a bathing suit as often as Esther Williams does, but then again, the water is her natural element. She always starts the day with a refreshing swim and she goes rowing daily for exercise so photographers out for some bathing suit shots can do worse than giving Esther’s agent a call.
Three fashion photos of Esther Williams. To the left she shows the last in Hollywood evening dresses , in the middle a bride’s dress and to the right, a dress like the on the Hollywood stars wear for summer cocktail parties.
Esther Williams has been at the top for four years now, four years in which the movie magazine and papers have been showering their readers of images of her in bathing suits. Because Esther is hot stuff.
Movie Town can’t seam to forget that she crawled her way into Hollywood even faster than Johnny Weissmüller did. And this is what counts in the public relation people’s, mind. But who is this "Bathing girl" with the raging success really.
She was born just outside Los Angeles, the youngest of five children and, yes it is true that she started swimming at the age of four. Their home was close to the beach and Esther was there every day.
She went to school in Las Angeles and later she studied at the University there, but she is rumoured to have used the swimming pool more often than the library.
At the age of 15 she was discovered by one of the coaches at Los Angeles Athletic Club and he told her he could make her a world class swimmer in four years. Never, said Esther, two years or nothing. Well, said the coach, two years then.
She went through, voice training and learned a lot of other things one need to know to be an actress, and it didn’t take long before she showed that she had a talent for the silver screen.
Her first part was in"Inflation", then "Andy Hardy‘s double life" and before she knew it she was a star.
Esther has hazel eyes, brown hair and looks absolutely smashing up close. She has been married twice, first to Leonard Kovner, a doctor she divorced in 1940 and to her current husband Ben Jage.
What a great post! Esther Williams was truly one of a kind and so were her movies! Thanks for dedicating this post to her. It’s interesting how a lot of actresses back then went through voice training. I heard Grace Kelly did the same…
